Chain-link fencing is arguably one of the most durable fencing options for property owners. The small spaces make the fence the best choice for any homestead, particularly homes with small pets such as cats. Moreover, chain-link fencing is easy to install because all you have to do is secure the fence to strong posts. That said, chain-link fencing lasts longer with proper maintenance. Here are critical maintenance tips for your new chain-link fencing.

Inspect Chain-Link Fence

Washing and cleaning a chain-link fence is fine, but your efforts will account for nothing if you do not inspect it for signs of rust. Notably, some property owners believe they should not worry about corrosion if their chain-link fencing is made from galvanised steel. While galvanised steel chain-link fencing has a protective barrier, scratches caused by nails expose the metal to moisture. Unfortunately, it accelerates corrosion and deterioration of a significant section of the fence. Therefore, you should regularly inspect a chain-link fence for signs of rust. The best time to conduct inspections is before washing a chain-link fence.

Clear Plants Growing on a Chain Link

It can be challenging to fight the urge to grow vines, flowers and other decorative plants on your chain-link fence. In fact, a chain-link fence is strong enough to accommodate fully developed vines. However, it is unwise to grow plants on chain-link fencing because some plants have corrosive fluids that destroy metal over time. Secondly, although chain-link fencing is strong, layers of vines might loosen the nails, causing a fence to sag. Thirdly, cleaning a chain-link fence covered with flowers and vines is impossible since the main fence is inaccessible. Lastly, plants might lift your chain-link fence or widen the gaps. If you see vines and other climbers growing on your chain-link fencing, clear them immediately before causing damage.

Do Not Postpone Repairs

Whether it is a loose nail or an undone link, minor damage might seem innocuous. Therefore, it is easy to postpone minor repairs, ignoring that the small damage will become significant issues in the future. Thus, you must repair the damage immediately after you identify it. For instance, if one connector dislodges but a chain-link fence seems unaffected, secure the affected section immediately. It allows a chain-link fence to retain its structural form, preventing future problems and costly repairs.
